Pairing your cigar with a drink

Rum, coffee or whisky: the right drink lifts a good cigar. How to pair them without going wrong.

A great cigar rarely smokes alone. The right drink can soften its edges, lift its sweetness, or match its power. Here is how to pair without going wrong.

The golden rule: match the intensity

The single most important rule is to match weight with weight. A mild cigar paired with a heavy spirit will disappear; a full cigar with a delicate drink will overwhelm it. Keep both at a similar level and they lift each other.

  • Mild cigar → coffee, a light rum, sparkling water.
  • Medium cigar → aged rum, bourbon, a glass of port.
  • Full cigar → a peaty whisky, a strong espresso, a dark stout.

Rum: the natural partner

Rum and cigars grow up in the same climates, and it shows. An aged rum brings caramel, vanilla and oak that echo the sweetness in a Nicaraguan or Honduran cigar. For many, it is the perfect match.

Whisky and bourbon

Bourbon's sweet, woody profile pairs beautifully with medium cigars. A smoky whisky is for the brave: save it for a full-bodied cigar that can stand up to it.

Coffee, the everyday pairing

You do not need alcohol. A good espresso mirrors the roasted, chocolatey notes of many cigars, and it is the classic morning companion. A Connecticut cigar with coffee is hard to beat.

A note on contrast

Matching intensity is the safe path, but a little contrast can be magic too: a sweet drink against a peppery cigar, or a creamy cigar against a sharp spirit. Once you know the rules, you can play with them.

And if you are not sure, tell us what you usually drink and we will tell you which cigar goes with it. Getting it right the first time is easier than it looks.
