How to choose your first cigar

The wall of boxes doesn't have to be intimidating. A simple guide to picking a first cigar you'll actually enjoy.

Choosing your first cigar can feel intimidating: the wall of boxes, the unfamiliar names, the talk of wrappers and binders. It doesn't have to be. Here is a simple guide to picking a cigar you will actually enjoy.

Start mild, not strong

The most common beginner mistake is reaching for a powerful, full-bodied cigar. Strong cigars deliver a lot of nicotine and can leave you dizzy. Start with a mild to medium cigar: smoother, more forgiving, and far more enjoyable for a first time.

A Connecticut-wrapped cigar, light, creamy, with notes of vanilla and nuts, is the classic first choice.

Understand body versus flavor

Two words you will hear a lot:

  • Body (strength): how powerful the cigar feels, from mild to full. This is about intensity, not taste.
  • Flavor: the notes you actually taste, such as cedar, coffee, chocolate, pepper or leather.

A cigar can be mild in body and still rich in flavor. For your first, aim for a mild to medium body.

Pick the right size

Cigars come in many shapes, called vitolas. For a relaxed first smoke, a Robusto (about 12 to 13 cm) is ideal: long enough to enjoy, short enough to finish in 30 to 45 minutes.

Match it to the moment

  • Morning or with coffee: a mild Connecticut.
  • Afternoon, relaxed: a medium Cameroon or Habano.
  • Evening, with a drink: step up to a fuller body once you feel comfortable.

Take your time

A cigar is not meant to be rushed or inhaled. Draw gently every 30 to 60 seconds, let it rest, and enjoy the ritual. If it gets too hot or harsh, you are smoking too fast.

And if all of this sounds like a lot, there is a shortcut: just ask. Tell us what you like, a coffee, a chocolate, something sweet or peppery, and we will put the right cigar in your hand.
